Rena Mirkin has spent over 45 years as an educator and has 35 years of  experience working as a top administrator and principal at some of the highest-achieving schools in both the United States and China. Earning her Master's in Counseling Psychology from Boston College and later a Master's in Education Administration, Rena served as the Principal of Massachusetts International Academy (MAIA), an international residential school located in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts.

 

Prior to MAIA, Rena was the Principal of the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) for 6 years, leading one of the most prestigious international secondary schools in China. Overseeing 70 faculty members and over 500 international high school students from over 40 countries, Rena was instrumental in establishing WAB as one of two foremost college preparatory high schools in Beijing. She helped successfully lead WAB's re-accreditation to the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), while simultaneously achieving new accreditations from the Commission on Independent Schools (CIS), International Baccalaureate (IB), and the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

 

Prior to WAB, Rena spent 11 years as the Principal of Wellesley High School, one of the consistently top-20 ranked high schools in Massachusetts - a state that's ranked #1 in the U.S. for public education. While at Wellesley High School, she oversaw 130 faculty members in charge of more than 1200 students. in 2006, Wellesley High School achieved the top SAT scores in the state of Massachusetts. In 2007, it was named one of Newsweek's Top-100 Best High Schools in America. Rena, as head of Wellesley HS during that decade, personally hired 85% of the 130 faculty members that Wellesley currently attributes its consistently strong academic outcomes, year after year.

 

Prior to Wellesley High, Rena was the Principal at Reading Memorial High School, another high-achieving secondary school in Massachusetts, where she also held positions of Vice-Principal and its Director of the Guidance Department.

 

Rena is part of the International Accreditation Team for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), as well as a having been involved with Babson College as a trustee and in numerous other positions since 1997. Rena has given numerous presentations at many international education conferences regarding the academic curriculum in International Education.

 

Rena is on numerous committees and holds leadership positions on many educational boards. A partial sampling of Rena's educational affiliations include professional memberships in: the East Asia Region of Overseas Schools (EARCOS), the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC), Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), the Headmasters Association (whose members include 75 heads of private schools and 25 heads of public), Massachusetts Secondary School Administration Association Committee for Curriculum and Instruction, as well as having served as the President of the Bay State Principals Association.

Alan is a graduate of Colby College and earned his Master's in Counseling Psychology at Lesley University. A former School Guidance Counselor at Newton South High School and the Head of School Guidance at Massachusetts International Academy, Alan has extensive experience and knowledge in the college application process. He approaches college advising with an empathic and personal understanding of how complicated and anxiety-provoking this process is for first-generation American college students.

 

Alan is licensed and certified in school counseling (grades 5-12) by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). He is also an official member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), International Consultants for Education and Fairs (ICEF), Independent Education Consultants Association (IECA), Massachusetts School Counseling Association (MASCA), and the Greater Boston School Counseling Association (GBSCA).

 

Alan also counsels student-athletes aiming to continue playing sports at the collegiate level. Alan was a distinguished high school athlete; he was the varsity captain in all three sports he played at Newton South High School (football, wrestling, lacrosse) and received league all-star honors in all three sports in seven separate seasons. Alan was named both a Boston Globe and Boston Herald all-scholastic in Football and placed 5th in the Massachusetts Division 1 State Wrestling tournament. Alan was honored with the Mendelson Award, Newton South's most prestigious athletic award given annually to one senior athlete honoring his/her athletic achievements throughout their high school sports career.

 

Recruited by NCAA Division I, II, and III schools in all three sports he played, Alan ultimately chose to continue playing football at Colby College where, as a starter, he led his senior team to a final team ranking of 2nd overall in New England among all NCAA Division 3 football teams. In 2015, Alan returned to Newton South, accepting the assistant varsity coaching position for all three sports he had played, providing him with a unique perspective as both a coach and as a player that's being scouted and recruited. Alan is an Accredited Interscholastic Coach by the National Federation of State High Schools Association (NFHS).

 

Franklin earned his Master’s in Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education with a concentration in Learning and Teaching. As a former English teacher for New Oriental School and Vice Principal at Massachusetts International Academy, Franklin has a deep understanding of the education space both in China and in the US.

Franklin has a diversified professional education portfolio with experience ranging from teaching English Language Learners to Higher Education Administration. Having been an English Language teacher, a teaching fellow at Harvard, and school administrator at an international residential school, Franklin has developed his skills over the years in helping students transition from one culture to another, and to succeed in a new academic, social, and cultural environment.  His fields of expertise include international education, student wellness, academic and career advising, as well as multi-cultural exchange.

Firmly convinced in the power of acculturation in maximizing student learning outcomes and career opportunities, Franklin works extensively with students by helping them navigate their academic and social lives. He has created spaces for international students to discover their identities and finding their voices through different forums, workshops, and podcasts.

AnneLiese Busch, M.A., Ph.D.|Head of Advisory Board and Educational Consultant

AnneLiese Busch received her B.A. in French and History, as well as her B.S. in Political Science from Santa Clara University. She earned her Master's in International Relations from New York University and also recently earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Leadership at Colorado State University. After receiving her Master's degree, she moved to Paris to work as the Head of Business Development for a public relations firm. AnneLiese  In 2009, she moved to Lima, Peru, where she was the Director of the Center for American Education at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola and the Dean of Broward College in Peru. As director, she was responsible for administering the A.A. degree program offered at Broward College, the B.S. program in Business Administration offered at University of South Florida , the B.S. program in Hotel and Restaurant Management offered at University of Houston, the B.S. program in Industrial Engineering offered at University of Central Florida, and several bachelor programs in business offered at University of London

 

In 2014, she became the Director of Internationalization at the Universidad de Ingenieria & Tecnologia, where she procured and managed dual-degree programs with Purdue University, the Colorado School of Mines, as well as several institutional agreements with Harvard University and MIT.  

 

AnneLiese is currently the Director of the Center for Global Engagement at Seminole State College and is passionate about providing unique international study and travel experiences for Seminole State College students. She also serves as the Executive Director for the Florida Consortium on International Education and the Director of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the council which oversees the Fulbright Program - the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government designed to increase mutual understanding and increase mutual understanding between the U.S. and people from other countries and cultures.
